1992 National Curriculum Physical Education (NCPE)

In 1992, the first National Curriculum for physical education was introduced, along with the National Curriculum also came assessment frameworks.

When the National Curriculum was introduced so were key stages which divided a child's school life into five main blocks, which were then divided further into years, formerly infant school, junior school, first year to fifth year, now made the transition from reception in primary school through to year eleven at high school, and year twelve and thirteen at college or sixth form, showing a continuation throughout the school life for a child (Leicestershire County Council Education Department, 1994). The key stages were divided into key stage one which is children from reception through to year two (4-7 years old), key stage two which is students from year three through to year six (7-11 years old), key stage three is year seven through to year nine (11-14 years old), key stage four for students in their GCSE years ten and eleven (14-16 years old) and finally key stage five, for students at college or sixth form, years twelve and thirteen (16-18 years old) (www.bbc.co.uk, n.d).

The assessment frameworks provided a way for schools to be judged on performance throughout the key stages as well as GCSE results; this shows a whole school performance and the development of students throughout their school life.
